Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia Flights

Searching for the Best Flights and Airlines

Hi! Edwin here to talk about Malaysian airlines and how to find the best flight deals when travelling to and around Malaysia.

Malaysia has two largest airline companies, Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) and Air Asia. Berjaya Air is another smaller player in the industry but has limited routes, mostly to Holiday Islands like Redang Island and Tioman Island.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang is Malaysia’s main airport which serves many other international carriers flying to and from Malaysia like Emirates Airlines, Cathay Pacific, US Airways, Japan Airways, just to name a few.

History of the Malaysia Airline Companies

MAS being the first and pioneer in this industry offered commercial flights since 1947. MAS was the only airline operator since then and monopolized the airline industry in Malaysia.

However, not too long ago, in year 2001, Air Asia started a revolution on how it operates and started with the low cost no frills business model it still adopts till today. Air Asia was unprofitable before its current founder and CEO, Tan Sri Tony Fernandez bought over the previous management.

Both tourists as well as locals are sold with this idea, Air Asia even gave free seats at certain routes (especially local Malaysian routes) if you book way in advance, usually 1 year ahead.

MAS has always been the high-end airline in Malaysia. Serving food is standard. And for International long haul flights, even wine and other alcoholic beverages are served.

Air Asia on the other hand has an in-flight option to purchase food and drinks albeit at a more expensive. They probably figured they could get more profit through ancillary services and sales and getting capacity filled rather than pre-package them as standard.

Remember, liquid drinks are not allowed to pass the custom when you are boarding an aircraft in Malaysia.

If you intend to travel long haul, then booking a flight with MAS will be a good idea. Otherwise, if you are travelling from one State to another within Malaysia, then Air Asia will be a safe bet.

I have personally travelled Air Asia to short distance destinations around Malaysia and Singapore for many times. And in my honest opinion, the inadequate leg room and quality of flight are non-issue.

My flight to Langkawi with AirAsia took about 1 hour was comfortable to say the least. They have an in-flight magazine published by Air Asia themselves which kept me companied.
Air Asia also flies to other countries with its Air Asia X brand and destinations include Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India, Middle East and Europe.

Take note that Air Asia do not land on KLIA, instead it operates from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) which is 20km away from KLIA.

I have personally sat on other carriers such as Emirates and Cathay Pacific for long haul flights And if you decide to splurge on flight, then MAS would certainly meet the standards of other international carriers, even for economy class seats and MAS has a wider range of route choice to international destinations.

Whether you are scheduling for a flight within Malaysia or to other countries, searching for the best deals is crucial. Being able to compare prices between competing airlines is bliss.

Here is a Flight Search tool I found interesting that allows me compare price quotes of different airlines to me destination for free. It was recommended to me by one of my foreign guests who frequents to Malaysia. I hope this will help you.
